A giant protective monster parent built for the classic D&D escalation, the encounter that arrives when the party defeats something small without checking whether it had family nearby. Deploy her as the consequence encounter that follows a fight the party thought was resolved, the boss of a creature lair they cleared too casually, or just the dungeon master's answer to the question of what laid the egg in room seven. Dark events near Marshfield are terrifying locals. Disease, rotten crops, and stillborn babies were once seen as bad luck or divine punishment. However, hunters and fishermen began finding small tokens in the swamp—first simple branches, then broken bones, ears, eyes, and entrails, even human entrails. As these gruesome tokens increased, so did the severity of the events. It became clear that all the town’s misfortunes were caused by dark magic whispered from the swamp’s core!
